Cornet dismisses Lepchenko

Alizé Cornet had some scares in a match interrupted twice against Varvara Lepchenko. The French managed to get rid of the American in three sets to join the Greek Maria Sakkari in the next round.

Alizé Cornet was very badly embarked in this part against Varvara Lepchenko on Wednesday. La Niçoise ended up winning in three sets and 2:36 of play with some interruptions caused by the rain. The 42nd world player was the first to give up her service game on her very first commitment before debreaker, then to re-lose her service again. This time, the Frenchwoman did not delay and had to cling in the second run. If Alizé Cornet took the American service, she was joined at 3-2 before a first interruption because of the rain, then a few seconds later. The Tricolore finally broke to 6-4 to equalize to a sleeve everywhere, before unrolling in the third set. With this success, she joined her compatriot Caroline Garcia who also qualified for the quarterfinals. La Niçoise thus offered the fourth quarter-final of its season after that of Guangzhou last week, Monterrey in April and Brisbane in early January. Alizé Cornet will face Greece's Maria Sakkari, the 80th World Cup winner of Elena Vesnina, 21st in the WTA standings.
